Quantitative analysis, a type of research common in a range of fields – finance, economics, marketing, etc., – employs statistical and mathematical modeling to interpret numerical data into business values. A critical tool to deciphering raw numeric data and gaining actionable insights from it, quantitative analysis helps navigate the complexities within a dataset and augment decision-making. 

In this article, we will break down different quantitative analysis methods, the applications and how it helps businesses.  

What is Quantitative Analysis 

Quantitative analysis (QA) is the process of collecting and analysing measurable variables. It involves using different tools, for example, statistical, mathematical and computational models to facilitate empirical investigation into observational events, test scores of students, drug efficacy, patient recovery rates, stock market performance, etc. 

Quantitative analysis is a critical tool in: 

  • Measuring Differences between Groups: Quantitative data analysis is a key tool when it comes to evaluate differences between categories or groups. Such calculation helps understand which company is leading in the dynamic and often unpredictable market environment by one-upping competitors in the dynamic and often unpredictable market environment.  
  • Assessing Relationships between Variables: Quantitative analysis facilitates the evaluation of variables. For example, with QA, you can assess and correlate between factors like price-ratio (PE), inflation, measure performance, interest rates, etc.
  • Testing Hypotheses: QA is widely used to test hypotheses in research fields. For example, let’s assume a healthcare researcher hypothesises a newly developed drug to be more effective than the one that is currently in use. The hypothesis can be tested conducting clinical trials on two groups of volunteers – one group on the new drug other on the standard treatments for a particular disease. During the trial period, quantitative data, for example, recovery time, symptoms, etc., can be collected and analysed using statistical methods to determine the validity of the hypothesis.  

Steps in Quantitative Analysis

Quantitative data analysis is a step-by-step process that involves:

Step 1: Data Collection

The process starts with data collection. In quantitative analysis, data can be collected from data warehouses and databases through a range of techniques – close-ended surveys and questionnaires, observations, experiments, etc. While collecting quantitative data, make sure it’s relevant to research objectives and is of high-quality that can rigorously validate the analysis.  

Step 2: Data Cleaning

Next up is data cleansing that involves tracking down and correcting errors and inconsistencies in the collected data to ensure only accurate, clean and consistent data is analysed. During data cleaning, duplicates, inconsistencies and errors are tracked down, typos and wrong entries are found out, modified or deleted. Data cleansing is a critical step in the quantitative analysis method that, if not executed efficiently, could skew the analysis.

Step 3: Data Structuring

After data cleansing comes data structuring that involves turning the collected data in a structured, legible format. The aim is to facilitate data analysis and interpretation. Once you have structured your dataset, it’s the time to format it into tables, spreadsheets or databases for manipulation.

Step 4: Data Analysis

One of the most critical steps in qualitative research, data analysis involves applying different statistical, computation or mathematical modelings on the structured data to uncover trends, patterns, or relationships. The output of data analysis is a clear, quantitative understanding of the topic being studied. The answers to the research inquiries you get in this step can be used to augment your decision-making process while also acting as a bedrock of further research.

Step 5: Data Interpretation

Data interpretation involves translating the results of data analysis into easily understandable language. In this step, you add context to the data analysis outcomes that facilitates the process of identifying trends, patterns and key business insights. 

Step 6: Data Communication

The last step in the quantitative analysis process is to generate reports or presentations with the analysis outcomes and communicate and share them with all stakeholders involved. The results are presented using data visualisation tools and techniques such as charts, graphs and tables. 

Methods and Techniques of Quantitative Data Analysis

There are two techniques – descriptive and inferential statistics – used in quantitative analysis. 

Descriptive Statistics

Descriptive statistics is a form of quantitative analysis that summerises, organises and presents data in a precise and meaningful way. As a foundation of almost all types of quantitative analysis, descriptive statistics provide a comprehensive overview of data without requiring the engagement with individual numbers.

The methods used in descriptive statistics include:  

  • Mean: Mean is the statistical process of calculating the numeric average of a set of numerical data.
  • Median: In the median, you find the middle number in a list of sorted ascending or descending values.
  • Mode: In statistics, the mode is the value that appears most frequently in a data set. A set of data may have one mode, more than one mode, or no mode at all.
  • Percentage: Percentage is used to express a portion of the total in a dataset. For example, while surveying a group of participants in a study, the percentage expresses how a particular subset of participants is related to the total number of participants.
  • Frequency: Frequency is the number of times a specific data repeats in a dataset.
  • Range: Rage denotes the highest and the lowest limits of a dataset. 
  • Standard Deviation: With standard deviation, you can quantify the amount of variation that exists among the values in a dataset and understand how close they are to the mean value. A low standard deviation means the values are close to each other, while a high standard deviation means the values are dispersed.
  • Skewness: With  skewness , you can quantify the measure of asymmetry of a distribution. It can be of three types: right (or positive), left (or negative), or zero skewness.

Example of Descriptive Quantitative Data Analysis 

Let’s understand descriptive quantitative analysis with a real-life example. Let’s assume the principal of a school is trying to understand how students of a specific class performed in a math test. By applying descriptive statistical analysis on the score every student participating the test, the principal can find out: 

  • Central Tendency: The average performance of all students can be measured by finding the mean value of all scores. The principal can calculate the median to identify the middle point of the score distribution – a key tool to understand skewness particularly if there are a few low and high scores. 
  • Measures of Dispersion: How the score of each student varies from each other can be calculated with standard deviation. For a higher SD, it can be said there exists students with different levels of proficiency in math while low SD means similar level of proficiency. 
  • Shape of the Distribution:For more in-depth insight, the principal can perform skewness analysis. While a positive skew indicates that most students scored below the average, negative skew suggests the opposite. 

Such analysis allows for efficient strategisation and facilitates the preparation of intervention programs. However, for more deeper insights, and augmented decision-making, descriptive analysis should be followed by inferential analysis. 

Inferential Statistics

With quantitative analysis, you can transform some mere numbers into meaningful insights in the form of numeric values. And through descriptive statistics, you can get a numeric summary of quantitative data collected. But for exploring the reasons behind these numeric values, you need inferential statistics. Going beyond the immediate data, inferential statistics, when following descriptive statistical methods, helps make predictions, test hypotheses or shed light on possible outcomes from the analysed data gained from descriptive statistics. The result is effortless understanding of the correlation between variables or groups under study, data generalisation and prediction that helps comprehend a dataset.

Commonly used statistical methods in inferential statistics:

1. Hypothesis Testing

With hypothesis testing – a statistical inference – you can determine if your assumption about a topic or phenomenon under study, can be validated to null and void. While the null hypothesis indicates a statement with zero effect, the alternative hypothesis represents just the opposite. In this process, statistical tests are employed to reject or validate the null hypothesis. The result of these tests depends on a range of factors – the p-value, significance level, the statistical evidence the sample data provides. Hypothesis testing is a critical tool in fields like scientific research, economics, data analysis and intervention development. 

2. Chi-Square Test

With the Chi-Square test, you can figure out how two categorical variables are related. It measures the deviation of actual data from what would be expected if the variables don’t relate. The resulting p-value helps determine if the null hypothesis of independence should be rejected or is valid. In fields such as the market research, healthcare industry, etc., Chi-Square test plays a critical role in determining the relationship between categorical variables.

3. Z-Test

A Z-Test helps determine whether the difference between two population means is statistically significant. You can also understand if the determined difference has appeared randomly or resulted from a distinct effect or influence. Z-Test is more effective for a large sample and known variances. It is a critical tool in hypothesis testing where you reject or validate claims about the topic/event/population under study based on sample data.

4. T-Test

With this inferential statistical test process, you can figure out if there exists any significant difference between the means of two groups.For sample data scattered randomly or not distributed normally, T-Test seems to be more beneficial.

5. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA)

To compare the means of more than two groups of study and determine if they are statistically different, you can use ANOVA. The results from this test are used to fragment the variability in the data into two elements: random factors and systemic factors. Systemic factors influence the data under study. On the other hand, random factors have no impact on the sample data. Getting in-depth insight into these factors help understand which factors influence the observed data the most. 

6. Regression Analysis

With regression analysis, you can dig deeper into the correlation between a dependable variable and one or more independent variables. It uncovers how a dependent variable varies with one or more observed independent variables manipulated and others remain constant. Regression testing is a key tool in trend prediction and forecasting. Industries such as economics, social science, etc., rigorously use regression analysis in their operating processes.

8. Confidence Intervals

A confidence interval is a range where, based on your sample data, predict the true value to fall. For example, a 95% confidence interval indicates that we are 95% sure the true value lies within this range. It’s a way of gauging the reliability of our estimate. In statistics, the “true value” means the actual or real value of a population parameter (like the mean, median, proportion, etc.). 

9. P-Value

P-value, a critical component in hypothesis testing, is used to quantify statistical evidence against null hypothesis, thus rejecting or validating its impact on data. A smaller p-value indicates strong evidence against the null hypothesis, thereby reinforcing the likelihood of the alternative hypothesis being valid.

10. Probability Distributions

The probability distribution delineates the probabilities of occurrence of different possible outcomes for a random variable. These  possible outcomes can be presented by using a range of distribution techniques – normal, binomial or Poisson – each with unique attributes. Which type of probability distribution technique you would use depend on the type of data and the conditions applied on the event/topic under study,

Example of Inferential Statistics

Let’s assume you’re a public health researcher investigating the efficacy of a newly rolled-out intervention program in lowering the obesity rate in a specific community. In this study, you can apply inferential statistical analysis to find out: 

  • Differences Between Groups: Inferential statistical techniques, for example, T-tests can be used to analyse the efficiency of the intervention by comparing the average weight of a particular group of people that received the intervention shed versus a group that didn’t. This way, you can analyse if there exists any significant weight loss between the two groups.

You can dig deeper into data at hand and predict and generalise a larger population using inferential statistical analysis.
